I mean, I can see where I might have this totally wrong, but it just seems that he's in complete agony over something. He also says "I can never make anything last" meaning it's obviously over. And he prays he sees the city limit signs...what if he's running from the city, and looking for the marker so he knows he's out of the city. I'm not saying he killed her, but maybe she died. He's accusing her "you can call it what you will but I'll call it leaving." All of this just seemed so clear to me, even the first time i heard it. I think he's hurt, depressed, regretful, and kind of angry.
