These fit perfectly about a friend I have... the war inside himself between the idealism which believes that hope exists, and the realism that won't accept the existence of hope. So he ends up building up walls to protect himself from any sort of pain. But that causes him to miss out on so much in life. I wish I could ask him that last question... I wish we could ride the rising tide together.
