i think this song is about being too troubled and self consumed to take advantage and appreciate a perfectly good relationship. he is so numb because of whatever is bothering him, he knows he should care and it would be to his benefit to love her back as much as she loves him, but he just cant get himself to do it. she seems to say she will love him no matter what and she is ok with what few good times they had together. beautiful song.
