I think it's about oil. Digging a hole in the sand is like digging to get oil out of the ocean. Die by the drop is like we're dying with every drop of oil we consume. And I'm gonna take you for worse or better is like I'm gonna use oil even though I know it's polluting.

This is my favorite interpretation. I know White isn't above a love song, but I don't think this has anything to do with male/female relations. The oil theory makes a lot of sense. It's a big issue right now. I also think it's poking at capitalism a little:
