To me, it seems to be aimed at the survivors of one who has passed away,
by their own hand in "Self Murder-Death", it's a recovery song for the
friends & family, of a SUICIDE VICTIM, friend, of whom they had watched
the pain and turmoil, sinking away in ebb and flow of disturbing saddness
in the long battle of trying to control the mental illness.
Where's their Spirit? Did they finally find 'Peace' from the sickness of
their suffering pain, which eats away at their Heart & Soul, in their daily
battle for sanity.
That it takes time to get through Grief, to realize they are gone & won't be
back again, and that, no matter how hard you might try... you can't always
stop or change another person's will or destiny.
This is an especially difficult & emotional song to the person, who knows in
their heart, that Suicide will be Their Own Final Act, when all hope is gone,
it will be the last grasp, at a sense of control. Two more lines from "When It
Don't Come Easy"... 'Tonight I cry for love I've lost, & love I never found'
Another song with similar expressions is Lucinda Williams "See What You Lost
When You Left This World"
