Wouldn't interpret it as god. More as a woman who loves him in spite of his faults or rather his past...

If you actually listen to the lyrics

"I'm not afraid if I live or die I'm not afraid 'cause I believe"

is followed by

"Your love is blind, blind as a bat"

So he's not talking about some sort of religious belief.
