Nobody else commented yet? Dan might be better known for his sweet ballads and this is one of his more hard-edged songs. But the passion and the story are still there. It surely is based on his real life as a touring musician, staying in hotel rooms all around the country (and the world) and missing the love of his life. (Maybe written for his wife? I'd like to think so.) Although the tone of the song is melancholy and plainative, it is actually positive underneath, since he tells her that her love is what guides and keeps him going. I like to think that at the end of the tour he goes home and there she is, waiting.
