To me, this song is about a man finding courage through woman's love.

The first stanza conveys the singer's difficulties ("But the dreams I've seen LATELY Keep on turning out and burning out ..."). The singer even asks for a divine intervention ("So put me on a highway And SHOW ME A SIGN"). In the same stanza, the phrase "And take it to the limit one more time" seems to refer to what the singer himself would do, if he were given the sign. He would "take it to the limit." that is, he would do his best (whatever he was pursuing).

In the next stanza, the singer ponders his options ("You can spend all your time making money ... You can spend all your love making time.") It is clear, however, it is important for him to know whether the woman (in the first stanza) would still stay with him, if he were to fail ("If it all fell to pieces tomorrow Would you still be mine?") This stanza is confusing, because the pronoun "you" in the earlier part of the stanza seem to refer to himself ("You can spend all your ..."). Later, "you" seems to refer to the woman ("would YOU still be mine?").

In the third stanza, the singer remembers his ifficult past and how the woman stayed with him. He remembers his struggles ("And when you're looking for your freedom (Nobody seems to care) And you can't find the door (Can't find it anywhere)")). He also remembers how the woman stayed with him ("when there's nothing to believe in Still you're coming back, you're running back You're coming back for more.").

By the end of the song, the singer has answered his own question "if it all goes to pieces tomorrow, would you still be mine?"). It is interesting that, in the last stanza, "Put me on the highway, show me a sign" seems like a request to the woman , to allow him to take the chance, for the one last time.

Just my interpretation.

A great, great song.
