Cover art for Mai lyrics by Josh Groban

Josh Groban is great and the one thing that I really like about him is his choice of songs. He doesn't pick cheesy cliche pop regurgitations. He picks stuff that has a meaning or a message or something that people can identify with ( I suppose other artists do the same but Josh is sincere). There's always a lot of emotion in his songs and maturity as well. Mai is no exception.

My take on the song is that the person who is singing is reflecting on a person who one day is in "love" with him and the next day breaks it off.

Don't look at me Don't try to explain I knew It would end sooner or later Only yesterday You told me, "I love you so" But it was just A state of agony

Kinda pschizophrenic if you ask me but more to the point the song writer resolves why he thinks the person was like that in the following verse.

Just now You seem so worried I would say That now you're suffering more than me But it's not true You didn't even love me Otherwise You wouldn't go away like this

In other words he is saying "look you never loved me because if you did you couldn't just pick up and leave you would stay with me"."All your words were just meaningless. You showed your true colors when you left". That's why in the chorus he laments this.

I will never believe I will never fall Into these fake emotions Where there is no mercy

That is so true because love is a commitment not a feeling and you can kiss, makeout, hold hands, walk on the beach, watch the sunset etc..... til your blue in the face it still doesn't mean you love each other. Love is expressed solely by commitment. If you stay with each other and care for each other that's love because there is commitment. Not "short term" commitment(That's actually an oxymoron like jumbo shrimp) its "long term" commitment. That's why so many people break up because they don't " feel" in love anymore. Actually they're immature and selfish because they don't want to commit and overlook another person's faults and shortcomings. Its just easier to find another girlfriend or wife but you know what they'll just do the same thing to the next person and the next and the next....until they finally learn and move on and commit and then they can experience what love really is.

It's a really powerful observation if you think about it and it takes a little maturity to understand this. Too many people jump into "love" but don't realize how perilous it is because it involves your whole being and it affects you for life. You can't love another person and the next day just move on. Love is awesome but its also dangerous if you just think of it flippantly and superficially. Love can scar you for life, love can hurt you immensely, love can turn your whole world upside down. The flipside is that if love is this dangerous it can also be the best thing that ever happened to you, love is the highest joy you can ever experience, love causes the the most euphoric and powerful emotions, love does the most good for you, love makes you come alive, love gives you meaning and purpose, love gives you security and legitimacy, love makes you happy.

It's kinda of like a highly dangerous and explosive substance that if you shake it, it will explode. Like Nitro Glycerine. The thing is it can either be an explosion of positivity in your life or an explosion of negativity. Depending on how you handle it the end result is your choice.
