I'm 98% sure that he says "tin-types", as in the format of photographs during the mid-1800s. To me the song sounds like it is about a love that endures throughout history, or maybe a reincarnation of love?

Yeah, tintypes makes more sense, especially with the line after it. This song makes me think of a love from a long time ago that was always kept hidden, was never spoken out loud...
