the guy on the plane wanting it to crash for sure has to be correct. i do get the feeling that the guy doesnt really want to commit suicide he just wants to feel what its like going through the experience of a plane going down. since its just something he wants to feel he doesnt want to kill everyone on board with his wishing and hoping but decides it doesnt matter because eventually the young children (which are the only ones he feels guilty about killing) on the plane will become jaded adults. i like the connection with another song on the record where he says he's always died in his dreams because he mentions a dream in this song and in it he dies as well. also i think the pompeii reference has to be what will happen to the bodies when they are burned at such a high temperture when the plane crashes.
