Lyric discussion by johnfoot

Jon did say it is about the "abolition of genres" which is evident in the fact that the song is about "Punk" and yet it is a piano ballad, the opposite of what you'd expect. Personally I think the song is talking about how punk rock and the whole rock 'n roll scene has become less of a type of music and has become more trendy and about the style and whatnot. "Punk is more than leather jackets"

Then Jon goes on to note that the true spirit of punk rock has fallen into just fashion trends and now the ones who call themselves "punk" play pop music that was originally despised by the punk's "Hold on, punk is dead but pop was never cool"

And of course the sarcastic line "I'll never be as punk as you and your tattoo." Obviously in sarcasm, and almost mocking whoever Jon is speaking to. Saying that just because the guy has a tattoo and looks punk, does not mean he is punk.

I really love this song, such an underrated masterpiece.
