From my point of view it sounds like he's illustrated the conflict between Science and Religion -- and he's sitting on the fence, disillusioned with everything going on around him. The consensus in the scientific community that there's no real proof of any higher power or god -- making the logical assumption that a higher power or god doesn't exist and we're just billions of complex organisms sharing a small island in the vastness of space -- has caused him to question his long held religious beliefs -- that there's a higher power/god who's in control and has a plan for everything. The former's evidence may be convincing, but in his eyes it's such cold logic that it's hard for him to accept over the latter.

In the end he'll have to choose. Does he accept one over the other? or does he come up with his own personal theory of life? It's up to you.
