This song is just like a lullaby.
I feel the narrator is haunted by a girl he loved. Their relationship was very sad - she was broken, he left her, yet he keeps thinking of her even though he wishes he could forget (hooks in my sides). When she "dies", I'm not sure if he means literally or metaphorically, but he feels it too, and they are sort of joined in this death.
Then again, Ben could have been writing things because they were pleasant to write. You can't blame him.
