I think it's seen as 2 sides to the story. He thinks the way he is feeling is completely opposite to that of the woman.

He sees that it's just the end but thinks the woman holds a bitter grudge, hence why he states it isn't war. For both of them to just move on...
"you fight your war, i fight for my life"
Like here, he thinks she is so concerned about fighting a war with him over the breakup. Whereas he fights for his 'life' because of the heartbreak.

I think the Cold War and it's legacy is one of the stories told here, along with holding relevance to other global conflicts (like say, Israel and Palestine, the United States and it's global adversaries, etc.).
