This song is heartbreaking but redeeming in the same sense- it's haunting all the while. Anyhow this is written as a person who is still in a relationship with someone who actively knows that he's the one being used. But passively accepting it, "The Art of War" the way I see it is things that she can use against him or things to make her stonger, but him saying "Was I the greatest" is almost like he's fully accepting it.
In my honest perspective, this song is so damn heart-wrenching as I said but only because I think of it as the idealist's acceptance to reality- because he built up so many aspirations about her like how he wrote songs that compared this to her, and how it just doesn't belong because it's reality and it's what he now accepts.
