this is taken from the Age, 3 September 2010:
"Julia spent her time in exile living in New York, slowly recording a solo album. Then, one day, she received a call from her mother. Her grandfather had passed away. Angus and Julia decided to play a song at the funeral: Old Friend. Angus wrote it four years earlier when he discovered his grandfather had Alzheimer's. After the funeral, they returned to the US together and recorded Old Friend (included as a 'secret' track on Down the Way)."
Thanks for that explanation - the song is so brillianty written: "window frames hold pictures of you."
My granddad died recently - but he wasn't alzheimic, thank god - and that song makes perfect sense.

I've just heard this song for the first time today and I fell in love with it oblivious to its meaning. After reading your description I started crying because I have lost two grandparents who have had Alzheimer's. This song epitomises the beauty one can find in sadness - while the tears still fall from my eyes, there is so much beauty in this song. Angus and Julia have an innate ability to write a song like no one else can.

Such a nice song...
