I think he's trying to show the shallowness of it all. I agree it suggests he's from a lower background and it works with that image as it seems to show his isolation from everything he is talking about. He's not a part of it and he doesn't feel like love has a part in it either. 'Pace all the rooms with a jealous style' is talking about, what i imagine to be, the object of his affection; who could so easily slip into becoming you archetypal self-absorbed, beautiful it-girl who hasn't got a clue with 'eyes like a child'. He doesn't want what she's a part of, it's not his life.
