I can't decide what they mean when they say we are numbered. The stanza before it ends with "Before you know it everything around you is dead" so I feel like if the song were to be told from the perspective of an old person it would make it seem as though he were referring to a group of people dieing. But then it would have to use the word "and" as apposed to "but". The but kinda throws me off is all interpretations. How does a limited number of people contradict the importance of limited days?

Maybe there's a scenario where the number of people is under the number of days. I mean like a fraction. The fewer people, the more days per.

If you change the "but" to "and" there could be another interpretation. The punk bands could be disappearing due to people growing out of it. So he wants his brother to walk in his foot steps. Then maybe "but" could work. If his brother is scared that the band is going to move on, then it could be that the writer is saying, that if his brother is so worried about his leaving, his brother should replace the now open spot in the venue's.

[Here's my favorite analysis:]

However, it could also be saying that, though the days are numbered, out minds and body's are limited to so much; not our populations. We aren't just limited by time but by mental and physical capacity. The idea behind the song could be that, even before time has run out we've stopped progressing or whatever. By the time time runs out we'll be done. I dunno, I disagree with that concept and I'm not sure the writer would actually feel that way.
