One of my favorite Matt Nathanson songs... Everyone who's ever been in an on-and-off relationship can completely relate.

"And when we can see things clearer Than we think we see them now Maybe kiss each other sweetly without trying to bite down Maybe then all this will be better And maybe then we'll recover"

The song is about a failing relationship but he doesn't want to accept the fact that it's not going to work. He keeps trying - they take breaks until they can "see things clearer", desperately hoping the relationship will recover.

"It's funny because I promised myself That this would never happen again I'd been warned and I'd been told, But it's these moments of clarity that cripple me most"

The couple keeps taking breaks, and he starts to promise himself that they won't get back together. His friends tell him that they're going to since they are always on and off. The moments of clarity where he realizes he wants to get back or wants to take a break cripple him because he knows he'll get shit for it but he also knows in the end he's going to do whatever makes him happy.

"You said I was tiresome, With heels dug deep, reciting my lines All tarred in make-up and glazed in light"

She wants to break-up for good but he's extremely resistant "with heels dug deep". They've been through this before and he's "reciting his lines". Her make up is dripping because she's finally realizing that the two of them just aren't going to work.

The first verse slightly confuses me. I'm certain this song could be interpreted differently, but this is what I believe it means.
