I think it's more about being in a relationship for a long time, and then realizing that that person has changed("but I don't know you now"), and trying to figure out what to do. The solution comes as ending things ("dark throws me a lifeline").
"Don't hold your breath," I see applying in two ways:
1: Telling the person not to hold their breathe that another 'solution' will be made clear.
2: Telling yourself not to hold your breath for the other person to change back to who they once were, even though you miss that person "I'm blowing breath...").
