I'm pretty sure this is about people gaining salvation. We humans dwell in sin, which is darkness, but when we get saved we are forgiven and that darkness around us disappears. I think 'And when all hope is lost it will be found when heavien and earth collide' is talking about the end of the world. Things are going to get really bad during the tribulation and hope will definately be lost for the human race. But the christians will escape it when Jesus comes back to bring them to heaven. Anyway it's a cool song and I like how the title is worded. It sounds really dark and depressing but it's really meaningful.
