There was/is genius in Al Green as he represents to me the regular guy expressing how he loves and relates to woman. But on to this particular song... I think he is fighting against his testosterone to kinda tell his lady that he is subconsciously/unwittingly committing to her, maybe even proposing in a sincere albeit cautious manner. His emotion for her has tipped his cynicism towards love.
