It's about a guy called Jimmy he served with in the army. The guy used to take his guitar everywhere, he used to strap it to the tank and stuff, and he taught James how to play.
Then the poor guy got blown up a couple of months before his tour was over.
So I think this song is like a tribute to him, but Jimmy wasn't the kinda guy to want a sad song written about him. Juding by the song, the guy was quite badass. Or maybe passionate.
