I have a much different interpretation of the second verse:

"This old war ship has wounds and it wont sail for nothing an old sailor said to me

And I was foolish not to listen and pay such close conscription at all the lies I believed

"But if you lend me some more labor and you put your name on paper we just might catch a breeze"

I know now he was not a captain now because of all my action I grow alone with the sea"

The warship refers to a relationship - he's being warned that this can't work out. The second part, "put your name on paper" alludes to marriage - if he makes a deeper commitment, maybe things will improve. The last line is saying that because of all his wasted time on something that never worked out, he has nothing left but to be alone.
