I love this song. I think it can be taken from either the dog's or owner's perspective if you want to interpret it that way. It can simply be a love/abandonment song as well - and a kinky one at that. Although I have seen Amorres Perros (ok, there's dog fighting), and heard Dog:God, the beauty of music and lyrics is that they can be interpretted in a many number of ways regardless of the intended meaning.
