I've always thought of this song as explaining the lose of innocence, but not to a point where your willing to give up your dreams.
the name "i can't see myself getting to sleep tonight" would obviously be a main theme, of being so sick of what he finds out that he can't even sleep.

is one of my favorite song lyrics of all time, its so true, he's like saying I'm tired of being ignorant, closing my eyes to the world, pretending that millions if atrocities don't occur every day. that i'll keep my eyes, i won't ignore this like everyone else does. almost as if he has a duty to stay awake, and not slip away from the reality of how life really is.
he sings about growing up and learning you can't believe in everything you see, and that looking back he can see how ignorant he was.

oh coming to realize that you really have no one in this world but yourself, yes other people might help you in this world, but only if they are helping themselves as well. Every single action is motivated by selfishness.
