I think the above interpretations are okay. But a few extremely important things are being left out. This singer is known for making albums that have themes based on his current emotions. In other words, songs are similar in each CD.

This song is obviously about a girl he is in troubled times with. But, my take is that A) They are socially separated and B) He still loves her. He says “Expect a thousand confessions that you will not find” meaning that she is waiting for him to apologize for how he acted; but he cannot apologize. Why can’t he apologize? (she would ask) Because he has lost his mind!

He may not have really lost his mind, but that is what makes the most sense for him to admit to (to her and his friends). She has done this to other dudes before, and they probably did confess to her (which is why he keeps saying “them”). While she is still “alive” and “breathing” somewhere, the knife is being twisted into him. She isn’t hiding (“going underground”), she isn’t “calling him out” to get answers, and she surely isn’t running away; she just is not talking, and it is killing him. He tries to take off his head to forget the memories they had together, but he can’t. He also can’t apologize. Probably because it was her fault too, and he has pride (he is a famous rocker).

And how did anyone miss HOLLOW? When the word hollow is used anywhere around any kind of rock genre, it has a drug implication. A syringe is even shown on the album cover! Pantera wrote a song called hollow (their most famous song) about a friend who did so many drugs he had nothing left.

Burt is probably saying that this chick could be hollow, just a shell of a person left after too many drugs. She could be empty (boring). She could say goodbye to everything in life. He could do all of these same things as her, but still be happy as long as they were together. He is touching on all emotion, which is why he says “forget the treasures we burned because we’ll be just fine.” …nothing tangible can equal the feelings he has with her and if they ignited all of their material possessions, they would still be fine.

Lastly, he says he hasn’t wasted a thing except his time. This is likely said because he knows she won’t speak, and he certainly won’t speak. All of the time and experiences that had with one another were a complete waste.

This song seems like a beacon of bright light because of its poppy nature, but consider that the singer admits that he didn’t mean to let a girl go (because he “lost his mind”) in Meant to Die. Instead of begging for people, he just burns.
