Cover art for Laundry Room lyrics by Avett Brothers, The

The first verse "Don't push me out. Just a little Longer" is about a man over at his girlfriend's place. And it's getting late and he wants to stay, but she's making him leave. Coupled with the next lines, "Stall your mother. Disregard your father's words", it makes me believe that the girl (and probably the guy) are pretty young and that the girl still lives with her parents, which is part of the reason why the girl makes the guy leave.

The next verse "Close the laundry door, tiptoe across the floor," is about how the two lovers have to be quiet in their actions because of her parents being in the same house. The guy then says "Keep your clothes on. I have all that I can take" which means that his interest isn't about Sex but rather her company and her love. He has all that he can take meaning his emotions are already running high and to add sex to the mix would be overwhelming.

The next verse

"Stop your parents car i just thought you'd ignore We can wish upon it but we wont share the wish we made But i cant keep no secrets, I wish that you would always stay Last night i dreamt the whole night long I woke with a head full of songs i spent the whole day I wrote em down but its a shame Tonight i'll burn the lyrics, cause every chorus was your name"

is about how in love the guy is for the girl. How he hopes and prays that the girl will always be his. It's hopeful and a little naieve in it's youthful ignorance, but that's what makes it beautiful, because we all hope that love will be the fireworks that is at first, and that it'll never fade.

Then "break this tired old routine, and this time dont' make me leave." Is the guys protest about the girl kicking him out every night because of her parents and their youth. He wants to stay because he loves her and he doesn't want to leave.

"Finally, I am a breathing time machine, i'll take you on for a ride " I take this last verse to be the Avett brother's stepping back fromt he characters (the guy and girl) that they created in this songs, and this is more of a message from them as artists and musicians to their audience saying "Remember when you had a love like this, when you were youthful and naieve. I am the time machine that can take you back to those moments. I'll take all the listeners for a ride, back to the time and place when they felt in the same way."

Song Meaning

I'm sure it must have to do with the title, but I always think "clean" when I hear this song. It sounds so clean.

Great interpretation, especially in your last paragraph. A perfect explanation for that particular stanza.

Yes. This is it! Great job. I do think that she is in total control of her parents, and he is on the outside looking in - like, perhaps they disapprove. I also think that - because of the lines where he says "stop your parents car" "stall your mother" "disregard your father's words" "i wish that you would always stay" - perhaps she and her family are moving away and he wants her to stay with him...
