I believe this song is about two people trying to overcome the fear of entering into a relationship or making one closer, possibly because they (one of them) have recently come out of one that was difficult or painful.
Relationships are hard work, theres good and bad times and thats why its difficult to enter into one:
(There will be some happy endings
There'll be dreams that don't come true
But in the times ahead, there's love and hate and hope and dread coming
All and all, in makes it that much harder for you, yeah)
But in the end, unless there are serious issues, wouldnt it be better to be together than alone? (What else is there for us to do?)
Their fears are based on previous pain, but there is hope that they can help each other to overcome it:
(You'll push back against the sorrow
Wait for the sun, and we get through)
But even though theres hope, theres also a way out if it starts to fail:
(And if the glare's too bright
We'll pull the shades, but (it) dims the lights)
Finally, its suggested that finding yourself in this situation is almost unavoidable, being human, having emotions and ultimately believing that everybody wants to feel love and will eventually take the risk to find it:
(That's just the way it is, but it makes it that much harder for you, yeah)
