I agree with your assessment with the exception of "we caught a spark" being a "small romantic interest." A spark is what causes a great flame...a fire...which can be very hot. I'm guessing it was not a small romantic interest; rather, the beginning of what was to be a very imporant relationship, which would explain why he wants to get over his feelings quickly. He wouldn't be spending so much time contemplating things if he it had been an trivial relationship (or trivial potential relationship)

I think it's about deciding to end a relationship because you know it is going to end eventually [via not being that great of a match to begin with]
