This discussion started, and ended a while back, however, I feel compelled to contribute my thoughts.
Many Songs have esoteric meaning. This is one of them. People who know what this song is about probably will not comment because unless you already know, u wont understand my comments, or you will get the wrong message.

It is not a "religious" song. It is a "spiritual" song that eludes to "religion". There is a big difference between the two. It is about suicide, but in the spiritual sense.
what hinders the souls of people to make it through, and what also causes his (and your) pain are the scars from shackles on his (which you still have on) wrists. Until you can remove the shackles from your wrist, you will never have a chance to find the true purpose of this life. Most people live and die without ever realizing that they are shackled (or in bondage) because the best way to keep shackles on someone is to disguise them, or make them think that they are jewelry instead of bondage. What most religious people think is a truly pure soul is usually a gray soul, and it is not their fault because they have good intentions and most never have a chance to truly see the answers inside of them (the answer lies in you). The groups, people, institutions, and structures that put these shackles on humanity for very greedy and deceitful purposes are weakening and destroying themselves in the process. This gives the subject in the song, his/her chance after their "awakening" (which is when the song changes tone) to find the true divinity within themselves, without that spiritual process being ceased or hindered. You will want to "settle the score" when you truly learn of the deceit that has been cast upon us. He is damning a false god created by man. There is only one divine spirit, and every single conscience being has been touched by it, and we all seek to get back to it to reunite with our essence. only a few will ever truly manage this journey, and most people cease completely when they have had a "substitute" provided to them. "i know your pain" who wants to be confused, lonely, lost, scared, hopeless, and sad? not many, but he did it, and others do too. So can you. (Hint: Just use the things that only god gave to you, and not the things that "they" gave to you with a "from god" tag on it.)
There u have it. Truth will invite attack and ridicule by most, and make enemies of friends, but it always has, and always will. It is nature in it's course. Most would rather protect the familiar comfort of bondage than experience the pain that it takes to see and travel the journey that each soul must make individually. "Hurray for the child that makes it through!!"
I can't get into this band...I just can't and it baffles me but hey, each to their own.
