Cover art for Joy lyrics by Lucinda Williams

A lot of these songs seem to reflect Lucinda's wandering spirit as she seeks the familiar moving around city to city, in this case from a former lover, who maybe lives in the vicinity. This song sounds like a post break up song--not to oversimplify--and she's still upset about it. She's never weak though, always strong and emotive. In the last song, Jackson, she's going to move to Jackson or other cities she names, she says, Don’t think I’ll miss you much, but it's hard to believe that from the tone. The thing I like about 'Joy' is the vocal rhythm and inflection in the I'll find my Joy lines. It's a similar tone to Jackson in the implied uncertainty about getting over whatever is haunting her at her present home but being determined to move on. But like Zappa said, writing about music is like dancing about archictecture.
