To me, it sounds like it's being sung from the viewpoint of someone non-human or someone otherwise not part of the "normal". And even though he doesn't fully understand how everyone else operate, he observes them, and wants to join them. To me, it's almost like a Frankenstein's monster kind of idea. He's lonely, and has an innocent sort of wisdom, but people are afraid of him or what he has to say.
