To me the song is pretty straightforward but I love it. I think he is talking about a lover that just left him.. he tries to tell himself that "he'll move on" and so forth. He is trying to "do things" on hi s own and is apparently "getting better". She "tries to treat him like a friend" but still calling him late at night so he keeps getting mixed messages. I do think in the end he knows he wants her though and resigns to that fact " the only one I want is is you"
