He's likening the war in Iraq with WWII and Vietnam. If you're a soldier in Iraq, it was your choice to join the military. You weren't drafted. I love the song's external message of anti-war, but the bit I mentioned bothers me deeply.

TheWheel- He is not saying that soldiers serving today are somehow less deserving of praise than their predecessors. You're reading the lyrics too literally-- the song is pointing out the general hypocrisies of war and how it doesn't really resolve larger issues.

Oh, is that what it's about? Not to me. Songs are open to interpretation, chief.
