I think you're right on Turtlefox, great thinking! Some of the lines don't really make much sense if the song was about a couple, but total sense if it was Tom speaking to his old fans that have left him. For example:
"This is the only voice I know
These are the only words I have
This is the only way I know how to say
We're not in love anymore"
What an amazing, honest, and firm of way of expressing how he has changed, but still writes music from the heart. I know the ill feelings that come from a band changing, but the most important part of AM!'s music is their brutal honesty, which I feel they have kept. The band could have just kept writing the same ol' lyrics and still have gotten a great record deal; have you heard how catchy this music is? Instead we get an honest progression of thinking that many of us old "punks" getting into our late 20's are experiencing ourselves.
