musikfreak, I like your drinking spin on it, but I'd also like to say I think he's presenting a general sinner as well (Drinking, lies, and worrying) who has made himself a "bastard child" by leaving his true Father (God) who he hopes he can "get back home to". Because there's no use in going it alone. :)
