I kind of love JH's music, so I know random stuff. In an interview w/MTV where she played "My Sister" acoustic, she told the VJ, Kennedy, that she didn't have a sister and that she sort of just made it up.
And recently she wrote a memoir, "When I Grow Up," and she wrote that the inspiration for the lyrics came randomly from one of her brother's longtime girlfriends, and how if she ever did have an older sister, she would be like her brother's girlfriend because she took her to her first all ages show and introduced her to rock music outside of radio mainstream. But mainly I think it's just about losing someone.
