I read an interview with Lush back when this album came out in the NME, and Miki explained the man in this song is her absent father. The woman who moves far away is her mother, I believe that she ended up living with her grandmother who she didn't get on with as a result of their abandonment. Hence "They left me here on my own in a nightmare".
