Sigh...
Mark Sandman was not a heroin addict. There's no evidence even to suggest he ever even used heroin once.
He died of a heart attack, and the heart attach was NOT caused by drugs.
The vast majority of his songs are about women, sex, and love gone wrong, but a few songs that have ambiguous lyrics that MIGHT be about drugs are what everyone focuses on.
You don't have to personally be a drug addict to write insightful lyrics about the effects of drugs, just as you don't have to be a murderer to write a song about murder.
Sandman himself said he was never into drugs, and his band and others who knew him have repeatedly said the same.
But the drug addict thing just won't die. It's sad that we've become so jaded that we can't imagine an artist's inspiration coming from anything but chemical dependency.
According to his roommate he did smoke weed pretty heavily for a while, saying that he'd have gone comatose had he smoked as much as Sandman, and his parents said he was into mushrooms and other stuff while traveling before he started playing in bands. What he did later only Billy and Dana know, and they said he was not doing drugs by then.

I could not agree more. Down with the "addict card when we play music". And ultimately addict or not, still what's more important is the music.
