Dancing On My Own Lyrics

It's possible Robyn has been deliberately ambiguous with the chorus. I think it's possible to get two different interpretations from the song, depending on whether you hear her singing "girl" or "guy":

The first is obviously from the perspective of a girl watching the person she loves dance with another girl.

The second is from the perspective of a guy. To me it seems like he is in love with another guy (perhaps his friend), who is straight, and therefore unobtainable. The narrator is watching as his love interest dances with a girl. As the narrator is male, the guy he loves will never see him as a potential partner, hence "I'm right over here, why can't you see me?". The narrator realises it's futile and acknowledges that he will not be "the guy" his love interest will be taking home, because his love interest only takes girls home.

Either way I think it's a brilliant and beautiful pop song.

YES! I totally agree with what you are saying! I think it's clearly ambiguous if she's saying "guy" or "girl", although I personally hear "guy". And yes, I think its about a male narrator who is watching his love interest, who is also a man, being with a girl and he will never be able to be with him.

She uses she throughout the song and i've heard her sing it acoustic and it sounds like she says gal instead of girl.... and on wikipedia and some of the interviews her producers and her talk about its watching her lose her man to another woman at the club... but i guess you could interpret it anyway you want to...
