When I listen to it, I picture him and his wife walking outside together one evening soon after they've fallen in love, and him just reassuring her that, even though she's been treated badly by the other men in her life -- and he's probably had some disappointing relationships of his own -- he loves her and now that they've found each other, they can finally be happy. "It's late but it ain't never." That's pretty much all I think it's about. It's so bittersweet.
