I think that this song is about the Christianization of Scandinavia. For centuries, Scandinavia was ruled by Norse pagans (Vikings). The song is probably from the standpoint of a secret society of Norwegian Christians (since the Norwegian king Olaf was the first major influential Christian in Scandinavia) During the Viking Age, Norse paganism was the ruling power of Scandinavia, England, Scotland and Ireland but in 1066, Christianity was declared a state religion in Norway. (which then spread to Sweden, Denmark and other Scandinavian satellite states) The determinations of the English missionaries through it all is reminiscent of:
"Even though the cold winds blow, the fire burns the same"
