He probably tried to get back together, but she wasn't interested (and I'd crawl back to you - this has already happened). He was hurt and wants her to fail and come crawling back to him so he can humiliate her and get back ((if) it ends like this, i can hope for bliss - i.e. it has not happened yet), however his obvious hate for her is also a source of ambition for her (I am the wind in your sail)... As she would never want to be weak enough to have to go back to him.
