Hmmm... I don't think I agree with most of the posts here. The first verse is written in the present. I think the song is picture of temporality and true love: knowing real, deep love with someone -- your lover and best friend -- and also knowing that everything is temporary, that life is short and nothing lasts. I feel like I'm demeaning it by explaining it, but the line "Love is the end" is a beautiful way to say that your love, here in this moment, is the final height of human existence, and this is all there is... something profoundly beautiful and immense and sad.
