I'm sure my own personal experience is coloring this but it's what I hear when I hear this song.
It's about someone who got into a relationship because of outside pressure: it just seemed like what everyone expected, so it was done. From the outside, everything looked ok but the relationship was a living hell. Not so much physical abuse but still bad for everyone involved.
Over time, the relationship started falling apart at the seams. At some point, someone started to think "So what's the outcome, what's the use? Why am I doing this?"
That's what the second verse is all about. "To rise up, to stand against, the blue skies, white picket fence." Everyone thought it was perfect but someone had to take a stand and end things ... to get up and start over.
In the end, this is a really powerful song. It's encouraging for the person who had to end things. Even with "your feeling of helplessness to salvage this fucking mess," it's still "within you to be alone."
... and now for an interpretation:
