The attitude of this song (according to the lyrics) is...apathy.
All you depressed people, wanna kill yourselves? Go ahead.
But there's a credibility problem. This apathetic message is delivered with tremendous...passion.
How can you explode with emotional catharsis over something you don't give a damn about?
You can't. It's not possible.
Which suggests an obvious explanation: the song is a pose. They don't mean it. They don't even know what they really think.
But they did know one thing: they thought it would sound cool.
"Don't you get sick of how there's always some do-gooder gently talking yet another emotional car-wreck down from the ledge? We oughtta do something different. Tell 'em to go ahead and jump."
Yeah, like THAT's something no one ever thought of before! Even Van Halen--who'd never win any awards for originality, or intellectual prowess--wrote a song about it.
Why does "Auf Wiedersehen" nod to Dylan, and/or Hendrix? ("There are many here among us...")
So they could hint--to those who recognized the allusion--that the whole thing is just a Cheap Trick?
