"None of this matters, none of these words. Common and silent we will die in this world.
Weve only spoken to those who agree, and without them weve fallen on deaf ears."
k i think this is saying how even though while it is still important to talk about God to believers we really need to focus on witnessing to nonbelievers.....
"stand on conviction and youll walk alone"
whats popular is not always right, whats right is not always popular....
"Yet solitude is better than a life not worthy of reaction. There is nothing to lose. So we stand alone or join those who follow misery."
as another saying goes... i would rather be alone with Jesus than in a crowd without Him.... and also this reminds me of The Sound Of Truth when tim says "if we have chosen to live against the grain, then why are we all facing the same way?" and basically to stand up for your faith!!
"for once i have stood, no one will know but alone i was born and alone we must go. fading back into an anodyne seato drown with all who've gone before me"
basically tim's borrowing from 2nd Timothy saying "I have fought the good fight, i have finished the race, i have kept the faith." and now he can rest knowing he did not neglect his duty
well i would have to assume the belief that Tim had in mind was Christianity, but it can certainly be broadened by a listener to fit the beliefs of his/her choosing.

I actually think in that last verse, "For once I Have stood..." he might be referring to the book of Ecclesiastes, ch .3 where Solomon says in V. 19-20: Man's fate is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies so dies the other. All have the same breath; man has no advantage over the animal. Everything is meaningless. All come from dust, and to dust all return.

I can kind of relate that to the song better, especially the part of the verse saying "All come from dust, and to dust all...
I can kind of relate that to the song better, especially the part of the verse saying "All come from dust, and to dust all return" Which can compare very well to "I was born alone, and alone we must go." But overall, I think he is saying to live for God while you can, because after we die, we will be forgotten and fade away, "fading back into an anodyne sea to drown with all who've gone before me."
yea i think your right...... at least it sounds right to me lol but we do have one advantage over the animal.... we have a soul that will live forever and (as a Christian) know God Himself! but as for everyone dying i see your point lol

I think it about how people fade into conformity and paralysis. Seeing as anodyne generally means safe or inoffensive. Before the epic breakdown Tim says "Fading back into an anodyne sea, to drown with all who've gone before me" meaning that too many people fade into inaction and apathy. Check out the rest of the album, it's a theme.

I think I agree with @Breathingperson. We often will try and offer a level of relativism because we don't want to be offensive rather than standing out we would rather shut up and be liked. Because it's better than standing up and having someone assassinate our character or maybe even change their position through a very reasonable defense. We go against the grain or we get swallowed up and our uniqueness is gone.

Despite being religious myself, I don't think its really talking about just Christianity but rather our beliefs in general.
