Oh the countless hours I have danced to this song while holding my new born colicky baby. This song will always bring tears to my eyes.
When I listen to this song, I hear a father/mother talking to their daughter through various points in her life...a little girl who is sad for not being invited to play host with the other little girls...or talking to his/her teenaged girl who is upset because she is not cool like all the other debutante (who, I point out, are the epitome of fakeness). I hear a father/mother who is trying to comfort his/her daughter and convey that all these little things, that may, at that moment, seem like the be all and end all, actually don’t matter. That at the end of the day, true happiness will only be found when you can look past these superficialities (... “and you've auctioned all your clothes”...) And love you for who YOU are (imperfections and all).
